London: Dominic Thiem beat defending champion Alexander Zverev on Saturday to join Roger Federer’s conqueror Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the ATP Finals in London. The Austrian fifth seed saw off the big-serving German 7-5, 6-3 after Greece’s Tsitsipas, making his debut at the tournament, had earlier beaten Federer 6-3, 6-4. Thiem is playing in his fourth ATP Finals but during his first three trips to the season finale, he won only three matches and never advanced out of the group stage at the O2 Arena.Zverev landed 75 percent of his first serves but Thiem was tougher in the big moments, breaking in the 12th game of the opening set and in the sixth game of the second set.The Austrian also saved all four break points on his racquet.Germany’s Zverev, who beat Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, went toe to toe with Thiem in a relatively uneventful first set but served a double fault to lose the opener 7-5.DELIGHT FOR DOMI 💪The moment @ThiemDomi secured his place in the #NittoATPFinals championship match 👏🎥: @TennisTV pic.twitter.com/e41HwW77x9— ATP Tour (@atptour) November 16, 2019 The seventh seed, 22, regrouped and settled back into his serving rhythm at the beginning of the second set but was broken again to trail 4-2.Thiem, looking unflustered, fended off a couple of break points in the following game and served out to take the match, winning with a forehand down the line.”This is a big, big dream coming true for me, it is one of the biggest and most prestigious tournaments of the whole year and I’m getting the chance to play the final,” said Thiem. The 26-year-old, who reached the final of this year’s French Open, has been considered a clay-court specialist but joked after winning indoors in Vienna last month and now reaching the final in London he was becoming a “big, big fan of faster hard surfaces”.TSITSIPAS SNUFFS OUT FEDEREREarlier, Tsitsipas, 17 years younger than Federer, ended the 38-year-old’s hopes of securing a seventh year-end title.Federer was unrecognisable from the player who dominated Djokovic in his final round-robin match, struggling on serve and hitting a total of 26 unforced errors compared with just five against the Serbian. The youngest finalist at the season-ending event since Del Potro in 2009!Seriously impressive from @StefTsitsipas 👏🎥: @TennisTV | #NittoATPFinals pic.twitter.com/5brsDQ7xLf— ATP Tour (@atptour) November 16, 2019 But Tsitsipas belied his years with a performance full of confidence and grit, saving 11 out of 12 break points during the match.”I’m so proud of myself today, a great performance and once again the people were great,” he said.”I really enjoyed myself on the court and sometimes in matches like these you wonder how you recover from difficulties and break point down.”Tsitsipas, ignoring loud support for Federer, broke the Swiss at the first time of asking, taking advantage of two missed overheads. The Greek was forced to dig deep in a dramatic 13-minute final game of the first set in which he saved two break points and needed seven set points to close it out 6-3.Federer was in deep trouble when Tsitsipas broke him to love in the third game of the second set but he finally made a break point count to level at 2-2.Undaunted, Tsitsipas, dominating rallies from the back of the court, broke again straight away with a forehand cross-court winner for a 3-2 lead.At 5-4 down Federer knew he had to break Tsitsipas for only the second time in the match. The Greek slipped to 15-40 down but Federer again could not take advantage, spraying a forehand out to give his opponent a match point and he won with a thundering ace.”I’m frustrated I couldn’t play better, and when I did and fought my way back, I threw it away again,” said the Swiss.”It was also parts of him. He did come up with the goods when he had to and he was better than me today.” Get the best of News18 delivered to your inbox – subscribe to News18 Daybreak. By BEN HARRISNSW Scorpions and NSW Mets are on a collision course for top spot of the women’s Elite Eight division. The two remain the only undefeated teams in the group after two days of the 2014 X-Blades National Touch League at Coffs Harbour. They will meet each other in the final round on Friday and it could well be the match that decides pole position in the women’s open competition.Could being the key word. The Mets’ finals credentials will be tested as they take on teams in second and third positions on day three. They will meet Queensland Outlaws in the sixth round at 10.30am and follow it up by playing the Scorpions, who should beat NSW Rebels at 9.40am, if previous results are anything to go by.Mets’ could be without Australia women’s open player Ash Quinlan who was carried off in Mets’ 7-5 win over Queensland South Stingrays. The Scorpions had wins over Stingrays (9-6) and Outlaws (7-5) to trail Mets on percentages. The Outlaws went down twice on Thursday, which has put them in danger of missing out on the top four if they fail to fire on day three. They lead a long list of teams who are jockeying for the final two semi spots. The Stingrays remain fourth despite losing twice while The Alliance and Queensland Chiefs are in the hunt.Last year’s runners-up, the Chiefs, put their disastrous day one performance behind them to win twice on day two.Rebels are not totally out of it of the semi-finals but it will be a long shot, while NSW Country Mavericks’ campaign is over.No doubt the highlight on day three in the women’s competition will be the match between the Scorpions and the Mets, which will most likely decide top spot. The game taps-off at 3pm.You can keep up-to-date with all of the latest news and information from the 2014 X-Blades National Touch League in the following ways:Websiteswww.ntl.mytouchfooty.comwww.austouch.com.auSocial MediaFacebook – www.facebook.com/touchfootballaustraliaTwitter – www.twitter.com/touchfootyaus (be sure to use the hashtag #NTL2014)Instagram – www.instagram.com/touchfootballaustraliaYouTube – www.youtube.com/touchfootballausRelated LinksWomen’s Elite Eight day two
Alabama is certainly looking for revenge after last season’s blowout loss. Fortunately for college football fans, the current betting odds would anticipate a close contest. The Golden Nugget in Las Vegas has Clemson as a 2-point favorite over Alabama. From ESPN gambling writer David Purdum, on how far that sportsbook has those two programs ahead of the rest of the FBS:Aaron Kessler, senior oddsmaker at Golden Nugget, told ESPN that he’d have Alabama and Clemson favored by at least seven points against any other team in the nation. Georgia is third in Kessler’s power ratings.“They’re definitely the best two teams out there,” Kessler said of Alabama and Clemson. “It’s just tough trying to figure out how much better they are than the rest of the field.”With Tua Tagovailoa and Trevor Lawrence back to lead their respective teams, it’d be tough to see anyone dethrone either program.Senior oddsmaker Aaron Kessler told ESPN that Alabama and Clemson would see a much bigger spread if they don’t face each other.[ESPN] SANTA CLARA, CA – JANUARY 07: Patrick Phibbs #58 of the Clemson Tigers snaps the ball against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the CFP National Championship presented by AT&T at Levi’s Stadium on January 7, 2019 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)We’re only three months away from watching college football, and it shouldn’t shock many people that Alabama and Clemson are considered the early favorites to meet in the national championship.Betting odds for games on next season’s schedules are starting to emerge this week. This makes senses considering that a bunch of kickoff times for major programs were released on Thursday. It turns out that a few sportsbooks are also placing an early line on a potential rematch between Alabama and Clemson. Another showdown between these powerhouses would mark the fifth-straight year they’d meet in the College Football Playoff. In the event that the Crimson Tide face the Tigers this upcoming season, the edge is currently with the defending champions.

Rabat – A 37-year-old Moroccan man stabbed a 44-year-old homeless Georgian national in the throat on Saturday, June 8, at Rome’s central Termini station. The victim was wearing a crucifix around his neck. The suspect shouted insults at the Georgian before stabbing him and attempting to slit his throat, Il Giornale reports. The suspect then attempted to flee the scene but only managed to make it a few steps before being detained and arrested.“Everything took place in a few moments,” one witness explained. “The Georgian got off the bus and was heading towards the metro station in Piazza dei Cinquecento on the Via Giolitti side when the Moroccan joined him and attacked him,” he added. The Moroccan man is being accused of attempted homicide with “religious hate” being an “aggravating factor.”Read Also: Muslim Council of Britain Calls for Islamophobia Investigation into Government PartyThe incident caused Italy’s far-right Interior Minister and Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini to increase security measures. In a letter, Salvini called for an “increase [of] checks and attention in places of aggregation of Islamic citizens in order to prevent any type of violence against innocent citizens.”The approach Salvini has taken to increase security measures to counter radical Islam is a controversial topic, with many people arguing that it is discriminatory to single out Muslims for security checks.News of the incident is circulating on anti-terrorism sites alongside a direct quote from the Qu’ran taken out of its context, “When you meet the unbelievers, strike the necks…” (Qur’an 47:4).Giorgia Meloni, leader of the conservative-populist Brothers of Italy made a vitriolic comment against Muslims on social media. “Service sector employment will remain the most dynamic with respect to job creation in the next five years,” said Raymond Torres, a head researcher of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in a statement released today. The ILO’s Economic and Social Outlook, released earlier this week, found that public services in health care, education and administration will also continue to be a major source of employment. While increasing at a slower pace than the private sector, they will still represent 15 per cent of total employment. Industrial employment is expected to stabilize globally at slightly below 22 per cent because the pace of job creation in the construction sector is estimated to decline in comparison to the period 2010-2013. Meanwhile, employment levels in manufacturing will remain largely unchanged over the next 5 years and will account for only 12 per cent of all jobs in 2019.The good news is that there is also growing demand for jobs that require face-to-face interaction, such as in health and personal services, signalling the emergence of a large care economy.“These trends highlight the role of policies to help enterprises and workers seize the opportunities associated with new technology, while at the same time breaking barriers for moving up the economic and social ladder, especially for women,” said Mr. Torres. But global trends show significant regional variations, with medium-skilled jobs disappearing in advanced economies at a faster pace than is the case in emerging and developing countries. This polarization between higher and lower-skilled jobs is having a direct impact on labour incomes. The increase in jobs at both the lower and upper ends of the skills ladder, at the expense of those in the middle, has and will continue to contribute to widening income inequality. The number of routine jobs, such as machine operator or assembler has decreased in many countries, raising concerns over the role of manufacturing in helping workers to escape poverty.Without manufacturing jobs, opportunities for rural workers to improve their employment situation will be scarce. This shift of employment to services and a decline in manufacturing means a significant change in the skills demanded by the labour market. “There will be a hollowing out of jobs needing medium levels of skill for routine tasks that can be automated,” said Mr. Torres. People who once occupied these jobs will need to acquire new skills, or instead, face the prospect of competing for jobs at the lower end of the skill spectrum, he concluded.
