RBS, which currently has approximately 30 million customers, announced that it would be implementing similar measures to those issued by Barclays late last year. Barclays’ gambling-block feature allows customers to turn off engagements with all gambling-related properties, as well as blocking payments in four additional categories: food and drink; petrol stations; groceries and supermarkets; and premium websites and phone lines. Customers will also be able to implement controls that are specifically designed to limit withdrawals from ATMs, as well as credit card purchases both in-store and online. Santander and Lloyds are also due to implement similar controls for the 14 million and 22 million customers respectively. A spokesman for Lloyds commented: “Throughout 2019 we will be enhancing our customer communications so customers are informed and alerted to their gambling spend, as well as introducing tools to improve self-service options such as gambling restrictions.“New card controls give customers more control over debit card transactions for extra peace of mind.”Following Barclays’ announcement to develop blocking functions late last year, Marc Etches, chief executive of GambleAware, welcomed the initiative: “There are 340,000 problem gamblers in Britain and a further 1.7 million at risk, and initiatives like this can play an important role in helping to reduce gambling-related harms.“There are no limits to stakes and prizes for online gambling, and credit cards are allowed so it is important to make it easier for people to control their spending.”While the move comes as a positive step towards tackling compulsive behaviours, responsible gambling advocates are continuing to campaign for a significantly longer ‘cooling off’ period between deactivating a payment block and the ability to complete transactions.last_img read more

Pellegrini blames congested Christmas fixture list for deepening injury crisis

first_imgManchester City’s manager Manuel Pellegrini has blamed the congested Christmas fixture list for deepening injury crisis. The Chilean expressed his disgust over ‘too many’ matches played in during the Christmas period and believes that it could take a toll on Manchester City, given the amount of injury the Citizens have suffered, in recent weeks.Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic are already facing lengthy lay-offs due to injury. Skipper Vincent Kompany and Edin Dzeko have also joined the injury list, in recent times. Dzeko, was injured in a pre-match training session, minutes before Manchester City’s clash against Leicester City. Pellegrini, pointed fingers at the club’s congested fixture list, as a reason for enduring so many injuries.“I think the players play too many games during the year, especially the players of big teams because when they have an international break they must continue for their national squad,” he said. “Last year I remember playing nine games in December and nine games in January, it is difficult for the players to keep the high pace because in the Premier League the intensity of every game is very high.“I understand Boxing Day is important for English football, but Boxing Day is on December 26, I don’t know why we have to play the 28th and 1st January. Maybe we could play Boxing Day and one game more on the 30th before the end of the year. So one of the reasons may be that they play too many games, especially at the end of the year. Maybe it can also be the pitches are too hard, and a bit of bad luck. It is difficult to know exactly.”With Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic out with injuries and teenage Pozo, not the answer to Manchester City’s goal scoring worries,as showcased against Leicester City, Pellegrini could turn to midfielder James Milner, for providing a makeshift Center Forward. ”Milner can be an option and I have always said he is a very useful player for the squad. Maybe at some moments he wants to play more but whenever he plays in different positions, Milner is important. “That is why we keep him here and it is important he renews his contract with our team. Because inside and outside the pitch he is important to us.”Meanwhile, Manchester City concluded business as usual against Leicester City, as they defeated the foxes 1-0. A customary Frank Lampard goal in the 40th minute swayed all three points to Manchester City’s kitty. Manchester City meanwhile maintained their gap of three points with league leaders Chelsea FC, who sit comfortably with 39 points.last_img read more

McIlroy hints at US campaign in 2019 in pursuit of top spot

first_imgDubai, United Arab Emirates | AFP | Rory McIlroy dropped a bombshell Tuesday by hinting he could give up his European Tour membership in an effort to get back to the top of the world rankings next year. The world number seven plans to concentrate on playing in the United States, especially with the changes that have been made to the 2019 world golf schedule.Four-time major winner McIlroy is a three-time champion of the Tour’s Race to Dubai and has been a part of every European Ryder Cup team since 2010.Next year, the WGC-Mexico Championship will be played in February, the Players Championship has been advanced to March, the Masters in April, the PGA Championship has been moved to May and the US Open is in June.Which means there will be one big tournament every month across the Pacific until the British Open in July.“I am starting my year off in the States (at the Tournament of Champions) and that will be the big focus of mine up until the end of August and then we will assess it from there,” said the former world No1.“I think it is the result of the changes,” he explained ahead of the Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.“I don’t have to commit to anything until May, so I will not have played a European Tour event… I will play the WGCs and majors and events like that, but the true European Tour season does not start until July. “The way the schedule has worked for next year, it is going to be different for a lot of guys.“Everything is going to be so condensed between March and August, and that is why I am taking a big off-season to get myself ready, and then go at it hard from March all the way through to basically the end of the season.”The former world No1 has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational this year – his only title in the last two years – and he is eager to get back to the top echelon of the sport.“I’d maybe give it like a B-minus, and a win this week would get it up to a B,” said McIlroy about his season.“I don’t want to continue to dwell on the negatives. There’s been a lot of positives in there, as well. I’ve played very consistently. I’ve had 10 top-10s. I finished second and had a great chance to win The Open.“Obviously the game’s right there. It’s just a matter of doing it when I need to do it most.”He added: “Right now that is all sort of up in the air, but if it were to be that I don’t fulfil my membership next year, it’s not a Ryder Cup year so it’s not the end of the world.”McIlroy is ranked sixth in the Race to Dubai this week, which means even if he wins the tournament, he won’t be able to surmount front-runners Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood and secure a fourth European No1 crown.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more
