Cowgirls to Open NCAA Tournament Play Against Sixth Ranked Texas

first_imgLAKE CHARLES – Two days after making school history by becoming the first McNeese women’s tennis team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, the Cowgirls learned of their destination on Tuesday afternoon when the NCAA released the 64-team tournament field that has them playing No. 6 seed Texas Longhorns.The match will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 11 at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin. Texas A&M will take on Rice at 10 a.m. to kick off the round. The two winners will face each other at noon on Saturday with a berth to the Sweet 16 on the line. “We have a lot of fans and Texas is very close,” said Charoline Erlandsson. “It’s going to be the perfect opportunity for our fans to come and support us as well. Softball Claims Two MVC Weekly Honors For Second-Straight Week

first_imgST. LOUIS – For the second-straight week, the Drake University softball team claimed two Missouri Valley Conference Softball weekly awards, the MVC office announced on Monday, March 28. This week junior Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) was named the MVC Player of the Week while freshman Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.) was picked the MVC Newcomer of the Week for the second-consecutive week. Sowa had a great week at the plate capped with an outstanding three-game stretch against Indiana State to close the week as the team went 4-1 overall. In the five games, she batted .556 (10-of-18) with two doubles, four home runs, 10 runs scored, 14 five runs batted in along with a 1.333 slugging and a .579 on-base percentage. She went 3-for-3 in the first game against the Sycamores with two doubles, two runs scored and RBI. Sowa followed that with a career game the next day with three home runs, including a grand slam, along with four runs scored and a career-high seven RBI. In the final game, she went 2-for-3 with another home run and two RBI. All three wins over Indiana State lasted just five innings. On the season, Sowa is batting .322 and is second on the team in home runs with five along with a team-leading 26 RBI. Frank blistered the softball this past week with a .692 batting average (9-of-13) along with two home runs, six RBI, six walks and 10 runs scored. She added a 1.154 slugging and a .789 on-base percentage. She opened the week with a 3-for-3 day at the plate against South Dakota State and in the next game of the doubleheader went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run. In Drake’s first game against Indiana State, Frank tallied one hit and drew three walks, In the second game, Frank went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. In the series finale against Indiana State, she went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run and two runs scored. On the season, Frank is hitting a team-leading .368 along with a team-high seven home runs and she is second on the team in RBI with 20. This is the second career MVC Player of the Week award for Sowa and the third career MVC Newcomer of the Week award for Frank. Drake (16-11, 6-0 MVC) sits in first place in the MVC standings as the Bulldogs are set to host second-place SIU (20-8, 5-0 MV) on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series.
