A First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Ponda police station late on Thursday based on a complaint filed, police said on Friday. “We are investigating the case. A FIR has been filed at the Ponda police station by the victim under section 354 (outraging modesty) of Indian Penal Code,” Superintendent of Police (South Goa) Arvind Gawas told The Hindu on Friday morning. The priest accused of the alleged molestation, Dhananjay Bhave, will be summoned formally, an official also said. Two young women of Goan origin, including a student of medicine studying in the U.S., have accused the temple priest of molestation. Both complaints were submitted to the temple committee in June.“He (priest) came to the locker area (outside the sanctum) and on the pretext of asking me to take ‘pradakshina’, he beckoned me to come near and then acted inappropriately with me,” a victim has said in her complaint to the police. The complaints had earlier been submitted to the Shree Manguesh Devasthan Committee. In its response to the victims’ complaint, the Committee’s Secretary Anil Kenkre had said that it “could not lay hand on any dependable evidence to establish a prima facie case,” and had in separate emails, urged them to take up their respective grievances with an “appropriate authority”.On Friday, Arts and Culture Minister Govind Gaude expressed satisfaction that the victim lodged a police complaint. He told The Hindu, “I am confident, now that the complaint has been lodged with police, our police will probe the same fairly and promptly to ensure that justice is done.”last_img read more
