The Pacific in Union program run by PNG Rugby Football Union is fast becoming popular among schools nationwide with newest addition, Kopkop College.Kopkop College, based in Port Moresby, has expressed interest in taking up the fast-spreading program.Teacher Mary Udu said participating in the PiU program would be a great opportunity to engage the kids in sporting activities, mainly rugby union.She said that the only problem they were faced with is the non-availability of playing fields.She said that once the school administration and board come up with a solution, they will get right into running the program.Other teachers also expressed their interest saying the program would be a great way of teaching the kids healthy lifestyles and good eating habits.Kopkop College, being a new school in the nation’s capital, will also be joining the NCD Rugby Schools competition later in term three if all goes well with the implementation of the program.Kopkop College will be officially presented with new PiU equipment this week by the PNGRFU.Meanwhile, one of PiU’s pilot schools in Port Moresby, St Joseph’s International Catholic College, is well underway with preparations for their rugby festival in term three.St Joseph’s Head of Sports John Agovai said that the students have been in training and are looking forward to the big event on their school calendar, the rugby festival.Last week, PiU representatives Frank Genia and Kapani Robert visited the school delivering new rugby equipment for the students.Agovai said that currently, students categorized in the three different PiU levels have been focusing on their training leading up to the festival.Apart from the St Josephs, another pilot school, the Port Moresby Grammar has already begun festival preparations.Sports teacher Mr. Wahu spoke well of his students preparations saying that even though they only kicked off with rugby training last week, the kids seem more than excited and are looking forward to the rest of what’s ahead.
