TEMPE, Ariz. – Griffin Canning’s season is expected to be delayed, at least at the outset, as the Angels are still trying to determine the exact root of the issue that is causing discomfort in his ailing right elbow.Manager Joe Maddon said Sunday morning that Canning did not throw on the side Saturday, as expected, with the pitcher saying he was not up for it physically. That throwing session was supposed to be a part of a second round of testing following his MRI on Friday.“We don’t have any definitive answers yet,” Maddon said. “I think it’s Wednesday or Thursday that he’s supposed to be tested for something else. It’s like a joint vs. a ligament kind of situation and we don’t really know what it is.”It is unknown where that additional testing will take place, with Maddon calling it “another opinion.” Angels’ poor pitching spoils an Albert Pujols milestone Canning declined to comment in the clubhouse early Sunday.Maddon stressed that he is remaining optimistic that one of his top four starters will be a key member of the rotation this season, but he did acknowledge that starting the season on time might not be possible.“Probably, but I don’t know that,” Maddon said. “Just being pragmatic, but it would be hard to imagine (starting the season on time). I would say best-case scenario, he gets going pretty quickly after that.“I just don’t know enough. I said (Saturday) I’ve never heard stuff before. With this type of injury, the doctors are normally pretty definitive quickly, but this one it’s just not. So I prefer to be optimistic and just wait to make sure.”Canning pitched two scoreless innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday before his discomfort emerged. He was 5-6 with a 4.58 ERA in 18 appearances (17 starts) of his rookie season in 2019. He missed the last six weeks with elbow discomfort similar to what he is experiencing now. In two weeks we will know more, where we want to go with all of this and who we want to start this out.”ALSOMaddon was asked if he plans to address coronavirus precautions with his team and while the topic has not been discussed, it sounded as if it would be at some point. “I’ve been reading about it, we’ve all been reading about it,” Maddon said. “So every team has this nice little petri dish in there where if something were to go wrong, so we all have to be aware about it.” …Catcher Max Stassi, who underwent hip surgery in September was a late scratch Sunday from his role as a designated hitter. Victor Espinoza aboard California Chrome (2) rides past the finish line during the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, Saturday, June 7, 2014, in Elmont, N.Y. Tonalist went on to win the race, denying California Chrome the Triple Crown victory. (AP Photo/Florida Today, Craig Rubadoux)NEW YORK (AP) — California Chrome went home to the West Coast on Sunday with a bandaged right front foot — and no Triple Crown — after bumping another horse leaving the Belmont Stakes starting gate.Steve Coburn, who co-owns California Chome, was still smarting, too.He was irked Belmont winner Tonalist didn’t run in either of the first two legs of the Triple Crown. After the race, he complained others took “the coward’s way out” by skipping the Derby and/or the Preakness.A day later, Coburn was unrepentant.“It’s not fair to these horses that are running to entertain these people in all three legs of the Triple Crown,” he said. “It’s not fair to them to have somebody just show up at the last minute and run. I may have gone off half-cocked yesterday, but that’s the way I feel.”Under Coburn’s premise, there would have been just three horses in the $1.5 million Belmont, making it unlikely the third-largest crowd of 102,199 would have shown up or that a record $19,105,877 would have been wagered on-track.California Chrome, General a Rod and Ride On Curlin were the only horses to run in the Derby, Preakness and Belmont. General a Rod finished seventh and Ride On Curlin did not finish.Art Sherman, the 77-year-old trainer of California Chrome, distanced himself from Coburn’s comments.“Horses aren’t cowards and the people aren’t cowards,” he said. “He was at the heat of the moment. Don’t forget he’s a fairly new owner. Sometimes your emotions get in front of you. He hasn’t been in the game long and hasn’t had any bad luck.”Coburn and Perry Martin named their racing operation Dumb Ass Partners, with California Chrome the lone horse in their stable. The chestnut colt has earned $3,317,800 this year and brought a six-race winning streak into the Belmont.California Chrome had smooth trips in winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness to set up a shot at racing’s first Triple Crown in 36 years. But he had a rough trip in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont on Saturday, getting a chunk of flesh torn from his foot after bumping with Matterhorn coming out of the starting gate. California Chrome finished in a dead heat for fourth with Wicked Strong.“It was kind of scary. You come back and see a horse bleeding from the foot,” Sherman said. “He’s never had anything wrong with him. We’ve been awful fortunate.”Sherman said California Chrome has a superficial wound that should heal in two to three weeks. The colt will then rest for six to seven weeks after a tough Triple Crown campaign that involved running in three races at different tracks and distances over five weeks. His camp plans to point him toward the Breeders’ Cup this fall at Santa Anita.Sherman thought Coburn would apologize for his comments. Instead, the outspoken co-owner went even further Sunday.“It wouldn’t be fair if I played basketball with a child in a wheelchair because I got an unfair advantage,” Coburn said. “If your horse is good enough to run in the Belmont, where was he in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness? It says Triple Crown, not one out of two, one out of three or two out of three.”Sherman said, “I can’t make excuses. That’s not really what you should do in these type of races.”Frenchman Christophe Clement, who won his first Triple Crown race with Totalist, declined to comment on Coburn’s remarks.Coburn had predicted California Chrome would win the Triple Crown.“If they want to call me a sore loser, I don’t care,” he said.Horses are made eligible for the Triple Crown races in January. Owners and trainers of horses not nominated can pay a late fee of $6,000 in March to get in. The 20-horse field for the Kentucky Derby is decided by a points system, with horses earning points for running in prep races. The Preakness and Belmont have maximum fields of 14, but no points system is used. It’s common for horses to drop in and out of the Triple Crown series. In 1978, when Affirmed won the Triple Crown, the Belmont had a five-horse field. Two of the colt’s rivals did not run in the first two legs and one only ran in the Derby. In 1977, Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown. The Belmont had eight horses, and five did not run in the first two legs. One ran only in the Preakness, and one other besides Slew raced in all three legs.On Saturday, second-place finisher Commissioner was new to the Triple Crown series. Winner Tonalist wasn’t ready for the Derby, so trainer Clement prepared him for the Belmont.“California Chrome was running with tough, fresh horses that were waiting in the wings, and that’s what happens,” Sherman said. “We all know when you’re on this trail you got to have an iron horse.”The veteran trainer hopes California Chrome’s owners will keep him running next year as a 4-year-old. He credited the colt for having a lot of talent and taking his handlers on an exciting ride.“This is one of them races that we couldn’t win,” Sherman said, “but he didn’t disgrace us any.”
CELEBRATION—Antonio Brown celebrates after one of his 7 catches. He was flagged for one of 13 penalties against the Steelers for 125 yards. (AP photo)After an embarrassing collapse last week against the previously winless Buccaneers, the Steelers travel to Jacksonville to take on another winless team. Will they fail to put away another weaker opponent or will they actually step up and take control of this game? You never know who’s going to show up so anything can certainly happen. So far, through the first quarter of the season, the black and gold have been anything but impressive. They are in the midst of the weakest part of their schedule so it’s time to start winning ball games. Here are the Keys to A Steelers Victory:They need to eliminate the penalties. The 15 yard penalties have been out of control and it’s a sure fire way to lose a game against an inferior opponent, as the team proved last week. The offensive line better protect Ben. Pretty straight and simple. Without giving him protection, the team won’t be able to move the ball. The defense needs to stop crucial drives. Whenever they need to get the job done, the defense seems to fail. They need to step up on key 3rd downs and key drives, period.Blake Bortles is an x factor. The rookie QB has played pretty well since joining the starting lineup. Traditionally the Steelers D handles rookie QB’s. Can they continue to do so? They need to get to him early and often. Here are a Few Things to Watch:Cortez Allen-He’s the teams’ number one cornerback right now and he needs to start playing like one. Can he show us what the Steelers seem to see in him? So far that contract extension doesn’t look justified.Mike Tomlin-What will he do if and when the team starts getting penalized? Will he sit there with no e emotion or will he finally step up and do something about it?Antonio Brown-He’s run his streak of games with at least 5 catches and 50 yards to 20 straight, expect that to get to 21.The Defense in General-Can they get to the qb and apply pressure? Can they cause the necessary turnovers? Can they get off the field when necessary?
