first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppBahamas, August 14, 2017 – Nassau – Unemployment rate in the Bahamas declines 1.7%.  Since November 2016, the unemployment rate declined from 11.6% to 9.9% due to an increase (7,770) of employed persons and a decrease (3,485) of unemployed persons. The three most populated islands that were surveyed experienced decreases in their unemployment rates. At the time of the survey (April 24 – 30, 2017) the rate in New Providence was 10.4%; in Grand Bahama, 12.4%, and Abaco 7.8%.Among the employed labour force, there were more men than women. However, in all the islands surveyed except Abaco, men were fewer in numbers among the unemployed labour force. In May 2017, vulnerable employment was 8.2% of total employment. During the period 2012 to 2017, the share of workers in vulnerable employment was fairly stable and ranged between 7.0% and 9.2% of the employed labour force. The percentage of men in this category was higher, although the percentage points differences between men and women were fairly small. These workers as defined by ILO are less likely to have formal work arrangements, and more likely to lack decent working conditions and are often characterized by inadequate earnings and benefits. The private sector absorbed most of the new jobs since November 2016. However, when examined by industry, the “Community, Social and Personal Service” industry which includes the civil service, police service and the domestic services posted a 29.1% increase in employment; hotels and restaurants posted 26.2% increase and construction posted 20.0% increase.Unemployment among youths (15-24 years) in the country continued to be considerably higher than any other age group which is common to most countries. However, there was a slight decline in the rate from 25.1% recorded in November 2016 to 24.1%.Discouraged workers in the country declined by 8.8% over the six month period. New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco experienced declines in the number of discouraged workers – 11.3%, 8.1% and 14.6%, respectively. These persons, according to the standard definition of the International Labour Organization (ILO), ‘’did not look for work because they believed no jobs were available for them’’.The Department of Statistics is the Government Agency in The Bahamas mandated by law to collect, process, analyze and disseminate statistics. Qatar to hike minimum wage by end of year

Photo : AFPQatar could increase the minimum wage for migrant workers by the end of 2018, unions predicted Monday, as the 2022 World Cup host seeks to push through labour reforms. It would be the first change to the monthly wage since its introduction by the gas-rich Gulf state last November.”By the end of the year we expect a new minimum wage to be set, that’s good news,” said Sharan Burrow, general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation.Burrow did not name a figure but said the new wage would be calculated by assessing a “basket of goods”.She was speaking after meeting Qatar’s labour minister, Issa al-Jufali al-Nuaimi, and other government officials in Doha over the past two days. The minimum wage was set at 750 riyals a month ($206, 170 euro) on its introduction. In addition to the salary, labourers receive free accommodation, food and healthcare plans, covered by employers. The 750-riyal figure has been criticised as too low.”We believe it is not good enough due to the cost of living,” said Burrows. The introduction of a minimum wage was among a package of major changes announced last year by Qatar after signing a three-year programme of technical cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO).That agreement headed off potentially embarrassing plans by the ILO to open an inquiry into Qatar’s treatment of workers. The UN labour agency opened its first office in Doha on Sunday.Among other proposed reforms is an end to Qatar’s “kafala” system preventing workers from changing jobs or leaving the country without permission from their employer under a contentious exit visa system. An announcement on exit visas is expected within weeks.Since being controversially chosen to host the World Cup, Qatar has been routinely accused of forcing workers to toil in conditions critics have likened to modern-day slavery.last_img

Forest department set to brand Sunderbans honey

first_imgKolkata: The state Forest department is all set to brand honey found in the Sunderbans and make it more popular and readily available to more and more people in the state. The responsibility of developing the branding has been taken up by the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Ltd (WBFDCL).”A large section of people in the Sunderbans earn their bread through collection and sale of honey. People have a belief that honey collected from bee hives in the forest are more nourishing. If we can create a branding following proper procedure then it will surely boost the income prospect of those associated with the honey business,” a senior official of WBFDCL said. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeThe department will train the villagers about the modern and scientific process of manufacture of quality honey. The finished product will then be tested by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) who will give certification. “These are essential parameters for creating a proper branding,” the official added. The WBFDCL will video the entire process of the honey production and make arrangements for showcasing it in different resorts both in South and North Bengal. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killed “This will make people more convinced about the quality of honey and with the products being made available at all these resorts it will boost the income of those associated with the honey collection,” said the official. It may be mentioned that the state Forest department has already started taking steps to stop villagers from the Sunderbans venture into the core area of the forest for collection of honey, by encouraging the villagers to take up apiculture right in their native villages. People, roaming around in deep forests for honey collection or fishing in the creeks of the river, are very often mauled by tigers. As per estimates of researchers every year, around 50 fishermen or honey collectors are killed in tiger attacks. “We want to bring down the number of human deaths due to tiger attack to zero. Keeping this in mind, we will help villagers in taking up apiculture in all possible forms right in the villages so that they do not need to venture into deep forests. We are taking assistance from experts of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya,” said a senior official of the Forest department.last_img read more

Femaledominated workplaces offer less flexible timing

first_imgIf you work in a female-dominated workplace, chances of having access to flexible working arrangements could be less and not more as commonly assumed, new research suggests. The study looked at individuals in 27 countries across the European Union. It found that the best workplaces for providing flexibility were gender-neutral – where men and women were equally represented. The research, published in the journal European Journal of Industrial Relations, provides evidence to ‘reject the assumption’ that women have better access to flexible working arrangements and that female-dominated workplaces are better at providing them, said researcher Heejung Chung of University of Kent in Britain. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”Working in female-dominated jobs and/or sectors significantly reduces access to schedule control for both men and women,” the study said. It is commonly assumed that the low wages often found in female-dominated workplaces can be justified through better provision of family-friendly arrangements, but this research provides evidence that low wages are accompanied by worse working conditions for many. The implication for policy makers is that the group of the population that may be in most need of flexible work arrangements may be unable to gain access to them.last_img read more

Election Commission showcauses Dilip Ghosh

first_imgKolkata: The Election Commission (EC) has served a show-cause notice to BJP state president Dilip Ghosh for his controversial remarks regarding the Commission itself. The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in the state has sought a clarification as to why he made such an obnoxious comment regarding the EC. The remarks came from Ghosh two days ago after the election personnel removed a banner that was allegedly carrying his photograph and Ram Navami greetings. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataWhile talking to a private television channel, Ghosh said he would have taken off the trousers of the election personnel who had dared to remove the banner, had he been present there at the spot. The CEO office has taken a strong objection to Ghosh’s remarks. According to a senior official at the CEO office, Ghosh’s statements were derogatory in nature and hence, he has been asked to clarify why he made such a statement. Ghosh had allegedly used Ram Navami greetings and posters during his election rally flouting the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) set up by the Election Commission of India. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateThe state has once again witnessed processions where weapons were brandished during the Ram Navami celebrations this year. After his controversial remarks, Ghosh had, however, claimed that he did not flout any MCC violation by putting a banner greeting people on the occasion of Ram Navami. He went ahead and added that he is entitled to put out a banner as he has been a local MLA. The Commission, however, seems unmoved and has show-caused him. The CEO office wanted to know from Ghosh if he has conducted an election rally using various posters of Ram Navami or if any weapons were used during the rally. Earlier, Ghosh was seen displaying swords and maces during Ram Navami celebrations in Kharagpur. The Kolkata Police along with its state counterpart said no political, apolitical and religious organisations have been allowed to carry out rallies with arms. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while addressing a rally in Siliguri, criticised the BJP for taking out armed rallies and said they were trying to “sell religion” for political advantage. “Whose throat do you want to slit with swords? Whose head do you want to smash with the mace,” she had questioned while addressing a rally in favour of party’s Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat candidate Amar Singh Rai.last_img read more

5 Ways to Participate in the Bitcoin Revolution

first_img Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. 6 min read July 20, 2016 Bitcoin is the most successful digital currency to date. It is a new form of crypto-currency in which encryption techniques are used to control the creation of new bitcoins and to verify transactions.Enthusiasts for bitcoin include Bill Gates, the founder and ex-CEO of Microsoft; Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group; ex-US vice president Al Gore; and Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google. “At our venture firm, we continue to see an escalating stream of fascinating new bitcoin uses, cases and applications from entrepreneurs,” says legendary venture capitalist Marc Andreessen.Related: Why Billionaire Investor Reid Hoffman Is Betting Big on BitcoinHere are five ways to participate in the biggest financial revolution of the century:1. Acquire bitcoins. There are three popular ways to acquire bitcoins. You can do it by accepting bitcoin payments, mining for bitcoins, or purchasing them on a bitcoin exchange.A.) Accepting bitcoin payments: The easiest way to get into bitcoin as an entrepreneur is to start accepting bitcoin payments through a merchant solution. In 2015, there were more than 100,000 retailers that had already started to accept bitcoin payments through bitcoin payment processors such as Coinbase, BitPay and Coinify. These retailers now include high-profile businesses like Amazon, Tesla and Microsoft.B.) Mining bitcoins: Mining bitcoins is like mining for gold, except that instead of mining in a physical geographic location, you mine bitcoins on the online bitcoin network. Your tools for bitcoin mining are not gold pans and buckets but a powerful computer and specialized software. You mine bitcoins by solving complex math puzzles. As of July 2016, miners compete for a reward of 25 bitcoins approximately every 10 minutes when they successfully solve a puzzle. The supply of new bitcoins will continue to drop by half every four years. When bitcoin mining was still new, you could mine using an off-the-shelf computer. Now that there are a lot more people competing to mine, you need to spend more money for faster hardware. A cheaper alternative is to combine your computer power with other groups of bitcoin miners through mining pools like Slush’s Pool. Bitcoins mined are divided among the group in line with what has been contributed to the pool.C.) Purchasing bitcoins: You can purchase bitcoins using cash through a bitcoin exchange and then transfer the bitcoins to your bitcoin wallet. A bitcoin wallet is used to store your private keys which are matched to your bitcoin address as evidence of your ownership of the bitcoin.Related: How a Teenage Entrepreneur Built a Startup on Bitcoin RichesYou can also purchase bitcoins from individuals in your area on sites like localbitcoins.com. 2. Engage in services for bitcoin.“The bitcoin world is this new ecosystem where it doesn’t cost that much to start a new bitcoin company, it doesn’t cost much to start owning bitcoin either, and it is a much more efficient way of moving money around the world,” says Tim Draper, venture capitalist. If you don’t know where to start with bitcoin, take a look at some of the existing business ideas that have already succeeded within the bitcoin world:A.) Digital or hardware wallet services: All owners of bitcoins need a secure place to store their bitcoins. At the moment, they store them in a digital or hardware wallet that is similar to a virtual bank account. The biggest threat to digital wallets are hackers. Hackers have been known to break into digital wallets. These bitcoins are not backed by any government or the Federal Reserve. Once stolen, owners have no way of getting back their bitcoins or have much recourse against the hackers. Online security for digital wallets will probably be extremely important for bitcoin’s future. To protect your bitcoins, you can use cold wallets. These are hardware wallets that aren’t connected to the internet, which keeps them away from hackers.B.) Bitcoin payment processors: Also known as bitcoin exchanges, there are multiple bitcoin payment processors that have received substantial funding from venture capitalists to create services to process payments on behalf of vendors. Large businesses like Amazon, Microsoft and Dell all use these services.3. Provide solutions for bitcoin acceptance. One of the biggest challenges that bitcoin faces for its survival is to find acceptance among non-users. Current bitcoin owners are invested in the success of bitcoin’s future. If you can create a way to make bitcoin more widely understood and accepted by the public, you are onto a winner.4. Leverage blockchain technology.Blockchain is the technology that makes bitcoin digital currency possible. It is a public digital ledger of all executed bitcoin transactions.Related: Blockchain.info CEO: This Is Why You Shouldn’t Fear Bitcoin For many financial institutions, the blockchain recording system holds promise as a secure, improved and transparent method to speed up transactions, cut costs and eliminate fraud. Because of this, some organizations, including financial institutions, are looking for ways to leverage blockchain technology for their own businesses. This represents a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs to find new ways to leverage blockchain technology in order to create better systems and services for these organizations. For example, the blockchain technology enables Bitwage, a payroll company, to process international payroll in minutes instead of days through the traditional banking system.5. Invest in bitcoin. One reason that bitcoin has been popular as an investment vehicle is because the numbers are limited. There are only a maximum of 21 million bitcoins to be mined. Currently, there are 15 million bitcoins in circulation; that is, 74 percent of bitcoins have already been mined. The limited amount of bitcoins available makes bitcoin an attractive investment tool for many, although the price of bitcoins has been highly volatile. For example, entrepreneurs have been able to profit by buying low when the bitcoin first came out and selling high when its price rose.If you are a savvy investor, you may be able to find a way to profit from the changing price of bitcoin.Related: Hong Kong’s Central Bank Warns Against Investing in Bitcoin in Wake of Alleged Pyramid SchemeThese are just five ways you can participate in the bitcoin revolution. Study finds key gut immune molecule links obesity the microbiome and metabolic

first_img AllMedX Powered by Lupus basic review articles & clinical guidelines: Access on AllMedx.com. New research led by a team of scientists in Canada has demonstrated how a high-fat diet can disrupt levels of an intestinal immune cell known to help regulate microbial populations in the gut. The study describes how low levels of this molecule result in increased growth of harmful gut bacteria, leading to inflammation and insulin resistance.Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is a major immune molecule produced by mucosal secretions in the gut. This new study started off with the hypothesis that IgA could be the crucial mechanistic link connecting the gut microbiome with both inflammation and blood sugar levels related to type 2 diabetes.”IgA is naturally produced by our bodies and is crucial to regulating the bacteria that live in our gut,” explains Helen Luck, lead author on the new study. “It acts as a defense mechanism that helps neutralize potentially dangerous bacteria that take advantage of changes to the environment, such as when we consume an imbalanced or fatty diet.”Using a series of different mouse models the new research demonstrated high-fat diets directly resulted in a drop in IgA levels. The low IgA levels resulted in worsening blood sugar levels, and a higher propensity for leaky gut syndrome. To test whether these metabolic changes were mediated by gut bacteria, the researchers transplanted the microbiome of obese IgA-deficient animals into germ-free mice with no pre-existing gut microbial population. This indeed did seem to transfer the metabolic phenotype across to the germ-free mice, suggesting the gut microbiome alterations do cause insulin resistance and inflammation. Looking at human populations the research found fecal IgA levels rising in obese patients following bariatric surgery. This suggests the results should track consistently from animals to humans, particularly in regards to this relationship between diet, IgA levels, and the gut immune system. While prior research has uncovered compelling interactions between our gut microbiome and our immune system, this is the first study to suggest intestinal homeostasis is regulated by IgA levels. What this means is that combatting diabetes and obesity may involve looking at ways to boost IgA levels.”If we can boost these IgA B cells or their products, then we may be able to control the type of bacteria in the gut. Especially the ones that are more likely to be linked to inflammation and ultimately insulin resistance,” says Daniel Winer, corresponding author on the new research. The next step for the research is to investigate this mechanism more closely in human subjects to better understand how interconnected IgA deficiency is with obesity, gut microbiome dysbiosis, and metabolic disorders. The new study was published in the journal Nature Communications.Source: University Health Network Lupus treatment: Current challenges & developments on AllMedx.com.
