Rep Rendon supports plan adding resources to Michigans fight against PFAS

first_img Michigan Legislature approves fundingRep. Daire Rendon today voted in favor of a plan that will provide more financial support to clean up contaminated sites and combat PFAS in northern Michigan and the entire state. The Michigan Legislature approved $69 million for an environmental cleanup fund which also will help boost local recycling programs, plus a separate $20 million specifically to boost ongoing efforts to detect and clean up PFAS contamination. This is in addition to $60 million previously approved by the Legislature for testing, monitoring and emergency response to PFAS.“Communities across the state – including the Camp Grayling area – are discovering these chemicals in the drinking water they’ve depended on for years,” said Rendon. “Michigan is tackling this problem head on, working hard to detect and clean up this contamination. Our vote today commits more resources to the fight.”The same fund will provide about $15 million annually to help improve local recycling programs, another key environmentally friendly improvement. Rendon said rural areas across Michigan do not have the same recycling capabilities as more urban areas, adding this extra allocation strengthens Northern Michigan communities’ recycling programs and efforts to combat PFAS contamination. The budget bills headed to Gov. Rick Snyder for consideration also include more money for roads, school safety grants, child protective services, veterans services, the Soo Locks and many other important programs.###The legislation: Senate Bills 601 and 149.
