Tyler Extols Liberian Media

first_imgSpeaker J. Alex Tyler has commended the Liberia’s independent media for what he described as “the professional and splendid coverage of the December 20, 2014 Special Senatorial Election in the country.”At a reception marking the official opening of the 4th Session of the 53rd National Legislature yesterday at the Capitol Building in Monrovia, Speaker Tyler thanked the media for its “balanced, credible and on-the-spot reportage in the recently ended election nationwide.”“For the first time in my political life, I witnessed such keen and professional work done by the media. As watchdogs of our democracy, they help keep the process honest by being in every nook and cranny of the Republic during dark and difficult nights, making sure that only genuine results were communicated,” Speaker Tyler declared. The Bomi County Representative asserted, “Without smart-phones or laptops or other sophisticated gadgetry of the Western media and, without any immediate pecuniary dividends deriving to themselves, they labored in rain, in stress-and-strain and many other difficult conditions to ensure that only the truth, and nothing but the truth about the elections got out.”He pledged his unflinching support, with the assistance of his colleagues, to ensure that appropriate budgetary consideration be made to facilitate proper training for the media.According to him, the proposed training, if approved, will be conducted in collaboration with the National Elections Commission (NEC) with the intent to ensure a sustained, continued and robust reportage in the area of elections coverage.“Indeed, you are the watchdog of our democracy, the harbinger of the new Liberia and the heroes in the quest for honesty, integrity and fair play in electoral politics,” he declared. The Unity Party lawmaker praised members of the Electoral Body for conducting a peaceful and credible election across the nation, adding that their role played was vital. He then welcomed the 13 new senators-elect to the Capitol Building, noting; “Please remember your promises made to the people that were not made under threat or duress.”Speaker Tyler reminded his colleagues from the sister chamber about their duties which include, representation, supervision and crafting laws, as imperative and must be kept uppermost in their minds and actions at all times.“For those who lost or were not considered by the people this time, I say, take heart. Better days are yet to come; and I pray that you become a part of Liberia’s golden years, in public or private service, yet to come,” he asserted.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

MEN ESCAPE JAIL SENTENCE AFTER GETTING TASTE OF PRISON FOR ATTACK ON YOUNG WOMAN

first_imgTwo young men who gagged and bound a girl before robbing her have escaped a lengthy jail sentence after being given a taste of prison.Lee McLaughlin was given a taste of prison. PIc by Northwest Newspix.Lee McLaughlin, and James Leedham, were part of a three man gang who terrorised two young women in a house robbery in Carndonagh. The men had pleaded guilty at Letterkenny Circuit Court to false imprisonment and aggravated burglary when they appeared on Monday last.An angry Judge John O’Hagan deferred sentence until yesterday but had sent both men to Castlerea Prison to reflect on what they had done. The court heard gang forced their way into the house at The Mullins in Carndonagh in broad daylight on September 29th, 2013.The men had their faces hidden and had also brought an imitation firearm to the house. Two young women in the house were watching television at around 1.45pm in the afternoon when the gang struck. One of the women Shannon Doherty managed to escape through a window but another woman, Danielle Doherty, who was 20, was held captive by the raiders.McLaughlin, 20, of Allendale Park, Carndonagh, tied Ms Doherty’s hands with a cable-tie and put duct tape on her mouth to stop her from screaming.James Leedham got suspended jail sentence. Pic by Northwest Newspix. The gang tried to put her into a wardrobe but she refused to go into it.They eventually stole 36 packets of cigarettes, 6 packets of loose tobacco and €58 in cash which they put into a rucksack which they had brought with them. However the men were chased by some neighbours who had ben alerted to the robbery by Ms Doherty who had escaped earlier. They managed to flee through fields but were eventually apprehended by Gardai. The court heard the gang had planned the robbery after watching a video the previous night.Victim Danielle Doherty said she was still suffering from the attack and had to lock all the doors in her house if she was home alone.Leedham, 18, of Station Road, Buncrana, revealed he had been turned down for an application joining the army and was upset.McLaughlin had suffered a vert tough childhood and his father abused him and his siblings including occasions when he would stub cigarettes out on them.Judge O’Hagan said if he had sentenced the men last Monday, they would have been looking at a lengthy jail term.“The deviousness which they did it with was quite frightening – the taping of the mouth, using cable ties, attempting to put her in the wardrobe – it’s like something you would see in the movies.“I really do hope the four days they have had in Castlerea was a time of reflection and that they should not wish to be there again,” he said.He sentenced both men to three years imprisonment but suspended the sentences for three years and ordered them to be of good behaviour.MEN ESCAPE JAIL SENTENCE AFTER GETTING TASTE OF PRISON FOR ATTACK ON YOUNG WOMAN was last modified: February 7th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:aggravated burglaryFalse ImprisonmentJames NeedhamLee McLaughlinletterkennylast_img read more

JAMMY DONEGAL DAILY MAN SCOOPS CASH IN INCREDIBLE IRELAND SHANE LONG BET

first_imgHE’S a half-decent footballer himself – now Donegal Daily’s Mark Forker has shown his class…..in the bookies! The Burtonport man, currently plying his trade with Letterkenny Rovers (and the odd GAA match with Dungloe) really knows how to pick a winner. He watched in shock at the Aviva last night as Ireland beat Germany 1-0 and super Shane Long hit the first (and only) goal of the night. Forker had entered those two amazing facts on two pieces of paper half an hour before kick-off….two dockets from betting shop BoyleSports! He got 16/1 on a 1-0 Ireland win – and 10/1 on Shane Long scoring the first goal, the latter odds being a wee bit tight considering Long started the game on the bench. But both magic predictions came true, pocketing the Rovers man a tidy €150. (The only downside is he didn’t do a ‘double’ which would have netted him €900!)And Mr Forker was last seen in the early hours buying all his mates drinks in a city centre hostelry! He was unavailable for comment…..Mark celebrates with his sister MarianneJAMMY DONEGAL DAILY MAN SCOOPS CASH IN INCREDIBLE IRELAND SHANE LONG BET was last modified: October 9th, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:1-0betBOYLESPORTSDonegal DailyIrelandmark forkerShane Longwinlast_img read more
