The event was hosted by legendary broadcasting husband and wife team, Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan.Key 103 DJ Mike Toolan and BBC Sports’ Hugh Ferris hosted the evening’s auction with the star lot, a Hubelot wrist watch donated by Sir Alex Ferguson from his own personal collection, raising a staggering £12,000 alone. The Discovery Ball was raising money to help fund the expansion of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital’s world-class Children’s Clinical Research Facility (CCRF).Established in 2009, the CCRF was the first dedicated children’s research centre in the UK and is now one of only four in the country. Working with researchers, children and families, the CCRF carries out all types of clinical research, with a specific focus on the testing of new medicines for life-threatening and life-limiting diseases.Maurice Watkins CBE, Chairman of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “The Discovery Ball was an even greater success than we hoped it would be and, once again, we are indebted to our supporters for their generosity. We are absolutely delighted with our fundraising total and sincerely thank all of our acts who performed on the night for kindly donating their time to support this most worthwhile of fundraising initiatives.”Manchester-based Infrastructure and Managed Services specialists ANS were the event’s headline sponsor. Passionate about engaging their staff in their varied CSR programme, which includes fundraising, environmental initiatives and voluntary work as well as sponsorship, ANS also fosters young talent through their Cloud Academy – a yearlong IT apprenticeship programme that offers both structured training and real hands-on experience.A long-time supporter of the hospital Scott Fletcher, CEO of ANS, said: “As predicted, the Discovery Ball was a fantastic event and it was heart-warming to see the support coming in from the community. There was a lot of hard work behind the scenes and so we were thrilled to see everything coming together perfectly. It was great to see the fundraising target exceeded, but more than that it was important to get the cause in the forefront of everyone’s minds and draw attention to the hospital and the outstanding work they do in and for our community.”Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity is raising money to ensure continued excellence in treatment, care and research at the hospital – improving the lives of thousands of children each year across the North West and beyond. The support of the Charity means that the hospital can provide additional resources that make life easier for patients and their families who use the hospital. The charity has three main areas of work: to support research projects to improve our understanding of children’s illnesses to help to create an environment that’s more child-friendly to provide state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosis and treatment. For more information about Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity please visit www.rmchcharity.org.uk.last_img read more

PM Harper not happy with Attawapiskat situation

first_imgAPTN National NewsOTTAWA–Prime Minister Stephen Harper said his government was “not very happy” with the situation in Attawapiskat, the Ontario First Nations community in the grip of a severe housing crisis.Harper said during question period Tuesday that government officials were looking into the situation in Attawapiskat and that his government would be “taking action,” but it was not clear what that could be.“Obviously we are not very happy that the results do not seem to have been achieved for that,” said Harper. “We are concerned about that. We have officials looking into it and taking action.”Harper said the community has received 90 million dollars since 2006.He said that works out to be about 50 thousand dollars per person in the 2-thousand member community. The housing crisis in Attawapiskat, where several families are living in tents and many others live in shacks with no running water, has garnered international attention and even prompted the Canadian Red Cross to intervene.Liberal leader Bob Rae accused Harper of blaming Attawapiskat for its own troubles.“That response is a disgraceful response from the government of Canada,” said Rae. “When will the government start taking responsibility for this deplorable situation, which is an embarrassment to the reputation of the entire country?”Rae said the $90 million total included also included funding for education, not just housing. The money Attawapiskat receives also includes funding for the services the band delivers to its residents. The money was also used by the community to evacuate 100 residents two years ago after a sewage back-up made their homes uninhabitable.Attawapiskat has received an outpouring of support from Canadians across the country. NDP MP Charlie Angus, whose riding of Timmins-James Bay includes the community, has been a vocal advocate from the community. The community was visited by Angus and NDP interim leader Nycole Turmel on Tuesday. And late this afternoon, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Harper will be meeting with Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn Atleo.APTN National News correspondent Ossie Michelin is in the community and will have his first story Wednesday night.last_img read more

Bowser Administration Urges Solar Energy in DC

first_imgMayor Muriel BowserD.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) wants the District to use more green energy. On Aug. 12 she convened a press conference on the roof of the Frank D. Reeves Municipal Center in Northwest with officials of her administration. She, along with Tommy Wells, director of the District Department of Energy and Environment (DDOEE), were there to announce her clean energy initiatives which include solarizing residences and businesses. Bowser is following President Obama’s urge to Americans to use green energy sources, such as solar, when possible.“Washington, D.C. is answering the president’s call by making the District a greener and healthier city,” the mayor said. “And we’re doing it in a way that puts residents first and saves their hard earned tax dollars. We want to show the rest of the country what’s possible through commitment, collaboration and creativity.”Bowser has charged Wells with promoting solar energy to District residents. “Over the coming weeks, the Department of Energy and Environment will announce several initiatives utilizing solar power to help District residents reduce their power bills to lowering financial barriers and expanding renewable energy access to District-based small businesses through innovative policy-driven public-private investment,” he said.He said a program to solarize the homes of 130 low income residents is already in place. “Those residents will be in Wards 5, 7, and 8,” Wells said. “The process is simple: fill out an application, [and] the DDOEE will verify income, look at the house, and make plans to install the solar energy system.” Wells said that small businesses can go through a similar process.Robert Robinson, vice president for outreach for DC SUN, a pro-solar power organization, told the AFRO that many residents in eastern Washington are using the Low Income Energy Assistance Program because they need assistance in paying their electric bills and that solar homes are more energy efficient.Darlene Williams, a Deanwood resident, likes the solar panels on her roof. “Solar helps me save money with my energy bills,” she said. Williams said in the winter, her bills range from $15-$75 a month, and during the summer months, because her cooling system is on automatic, her bills are about $195. “If I didn’t have solar, in the winter my bills would be about $100 and in the summer $400,” she said.last_img read more
