Kolkata: CISF detained a person from Kolkata Airport on charges of smuggling gold on Sunday morning. Around 176.9 grams of gold was found in his possession.Sources said constable Hirday Bhanu Mondal of CISF noticed suspicious movement of a passenger near customs lock gate, situated between international arrival conveyor belt 15 and 16 of the airport.Mondal immediately informed the matter to other officers. One Ateesh Kumar Gupta, a resident of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, was detained as he attempted to pass on a packet from the customs bound area to arrival visitors’ area. When searched, CISF personnel found 176.9 grams of gold in his possession, including a gold bar weighing 162.5 grams and a finger ring weighing 14.4 grams, worth around Rs 5.50 lakh in total. The person later confessed that the gold was given to him by a passenger called Somnath, who had arrived on a private airline flight from Bangkok at 6.10 am on Sunday. Immediately, details of the person were conveyed to the Customs officials. Gupta was later released.
