Apple Tells The NHSTA Theyre Excited About SelfDriving Cars

first_imgStay on target Apple has finally shed some light on their self-driving car plans. Not a particularly bright light, mind you, but that wouldn’t have been very Apple-y, would it?In a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), director of product integrity Steve Kenner said that the company is “excited” about self-driving cars. That’s something that was already pretty clear to anyone who’s been following Apple Car/Project Titan developments. Still, it’s nice to finally see an official statement.Apple’s letter fell well short of confirming anything other than possibilities, really. Kenner’s full comment was that “Apple is investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation.”So, yes, Apple is still open to doing something driverless car-related. Are they building their own driverless car? Probably not, despite the lengthy string of rumors pointing to the contrary.Their comments to the NHTSA centered around data sharing related to accidents, saying that “companies should share de-identified scenario and dynamics data from crashes and near-misses” so that a “comprehensive dataset” can be assembled to benefit the entire industry. Not just the companies actually building driverless cars, but also the companies that are supplying things like sensors and software. It’s looking increasingly that the second group is where Apple sees themselves. They’re not a car company, after all, but they’ve got plenty of experience with technology related to driverless cars like artificial intelligence, mapping, and virtual assistants.Apple is in a strong position to provide critical software to automakers, and they’ve already got their foot in the door thanks to numerous integration deals that have landed CarPlay and Siri in infotainment systems.
